Maryland Basketball: Takeaways from Terrapins loss against Virginia Tech
By Sean Cole
Three-point shooting struggles
I am not sure how I can put this politely and nicely, so here it goes.
This current Terp’s team has to be one of the worst shooting teams in recent memory. Maryland has had some bad shooting teams, but nothing like what we are currently seeing.
In particular, the three-point shooting.
I can not put into words how horrible the Maryland 3 point shooting is, so the best way to say this is to show this.
Here are the three point shooting stats for every game this year:
Quinnipiac 6-17 (35%)
GW 3-20 (15%)
Vermont 6-27 (22%)
George Mason 9-28 (32%)
Hofstra 5-22 (22%)
Richmond 10-23 (43%)
Louisville 4-14 (28%)
Virginia Tech 1-13 (.07%)
What does all that mean?
The Terp’s have made a total of 44 three-point field goals out of 164 taken.
44 -164 = 27% shooting percentage.
I am going to put this in a better perspective for you.
Here is a tweet from Jeff Ermann of Maryland 24/7
To be honest with you I am not sure exactly what more I can say, except that Maryland Coach Mark Turgeon better have them shooting threes 20 hours a day every day, because the Big 10 season kicks of Sunday against Northwestern. And if the Terp’s shoot like that from three-point land in conference play, I would be willing to bet that would not win even 6 games in conference.
The good news and bright spot, is that it is not too late to run things around, but it is getting really, really, really close to the edge of the cliff. I haven’t lost faith yet in this team, but my patience is wearing thin for Turge.
