Alabama vs Gonzaga: 2021-22 key storylines for top-20 matchup
Biggest x-factor for Alabama – Juwan Gary
The 6’6 forward is technically part of the frontcourt, so Gary will have to deal with either Timme or 7’1 stretch forward Chet Holmgren at various points in this game. The sophomore is averaging 8.6 ppg and 6.8 rpg and is a very good defender and rebounder, two things that will be an absolute must in this matchup.
Alabama is going to have to score a lot of points to upset the Bulldogs and outside the usual suspects in the backcourt, will need someone like Gary to come through with double-digits. He’s had injury issues so far this season but should be good to go for this one. What he does will be very important to determine what kind of shot the Tide will have.
Biggest x-factor for Gonzaga – Nolan Hickman
Starting point guard Andrew Nembhard had 11 assists in the Duke game but also struggled from the field and had some turnovers. He’s going to be very busy dealing with Davison and Quinerly so will the team’s backup point guard Hickman.
The five-star freshman is averaging 7.4 ppg in 20 mpg off the bench and is the first reserve guard for Gonzaga. He played just 10 minutes against Duke but had a positive impact and should see more to help offset the small multi-guard lineups Alabama will offer. And in case Nembhard gets into any kind of foul trouble, it’ll be up to Hickman to run the offense.
