SEC Basketball power rankings: Alabama rises, Kentucky and Arkansas drops
Ole Miss has been almost exactly what we expected them to be roughly a month into the season. Kermit Davis’ Rebels fall somewhere between being an NCAA Tournament team and a truly bad team—likely an NIT team.
They wasted two early opportunities for quality wins against Marquette and Boise State in the Charleston Classic but were able to bounce back with a nice win over Memphis. They proceeded to take their worst loss of the season in a 23-point blowout to Western Kentucky in Atlanta this past Saturday.
The Rebels are led by senior G Jarkel Joiner who is averaging 15.7 PPG, 4.1 RPG, and 2.7 APG on 52.6% shooting through the first nine games of the season. Duke transfer Jaemyn Brakefield (8.4 PPG, 4.1 RPG) and Miami transfer Nysier Brooks (7.9 PPG, 7.4 RPG) have also been key players so far. Brooks leads the team in BPR and on-off defensive splits, per EvanMiya.com.
Ole Miss has struggled offensively, ranking No. 177 in adjusted offensive efficiency and sub-200 in eFG%, 2P%, and 3P%. Joiner needs someone else to step up and fill a sizeable scoring gap between himself and the rest of the team if the Rebels are going to compete with the top of the SEC once conference play starts.
