Who is the mid-major Player of the Year to this point? – Tristan Freeman (@hoopsnut351)
I mentioned this briefly last week but David Roddy of the Colorado State Rams has been the best mid-major player this year and he has also been one of the biggest surprises of anyone all year long. Just for some background, Colorado State is the highest-ranked mid-major, and before their Covid pause was a scary team who looked like they would remain undefeated for a long time.
Roddy led the Rams in scoring and rebounding and assists a season ago. He is also watching himself climb up the rebounding charts for Colorado State and is one of the best defensive rebounders in the country. On the offensive side of the ball, the junior forward is putting up video game numbers right now. He is currently shooting 60% from the floor, 50% from three, and 76% from the free throw line. This all leads to an average of just over 20 points per game to go along with his eight rebounds.
Colorado State is not likely going to see much resistance in the Mountain West conference and there isn’t anyone in the conference who is likely going to be able to guard Roddy one on one. If he stays healthy there is no reason why he shouldn’t be named the Mid-major Player of the Year.
Colorado State should return from their Covid stoppage at some point next week and they will head straight into conference play. Roddy is currently the front runner for this award. He is the current front runner for the conference player of the year and is good enough for consideration as an All-American at the end of the year.
