WCC Basketball: 2021-22 power rankings heading into Christmas break

4. Saint Mary’s (10-3)
Last week: Defeated Stanislaus State 76-39, Lost to San Diego State 53-63
This week: Missouri State
After a big game against UCSB, the Gaels had a difficult week playing complete games. Their blowout of Stanislaus State was just a one-point lead at halftime against the Division II team. The Gaels’ offensive inconsistencies continue to be an issue as the Gaels excel at defense and controlling the pace of play.
A hot streak in the second half helped them pull away against an inferior opponent and mask an 8-22 first half. They shot 36.5% from the field in their 10 point loss to San Diego State. When the Gaels shoot their 45% field goal average they can play with virtually anyone in the country, but if the shots aren’t falling things can turn into a knife fight in the mud.
3. BYU (9-2)
Last week: Defeated Weber State 89-71
This week: Southern Florida
The Cougars are still figuring things out with their depleted frontcourt while still showing the offensive firepower that makes them one of the best teams out west. Mark Pope’s team is still incredibly dangerous playing small, with Alex Barcello and Te’Jon Lucas operating as a perfect tandem. The question remains if forward Caleb Lohner can handle the task of defending bigger post players and that may ultimately decide the ceiling of the team.
