NCAA Basketball: 2021-22 Christmas wishlist for each top 25 team
6. Purdue Boilermakers – Have Trevion Williams start and finish games
Purdue got to be No. 1 in the AP poll for the first time in program history and looks every bit of a national title contender to this point. Guard Jaden Ivey has looked every bit of the breakout star everyone thought he could, while the center combination of Zach Edey and Trevion Williams has been 40 minutes to Hell to deal with. However, the sophomore Edey has gotten most of the starts so far and while he’s been great, has some weaknesses that opposing teams have exploited, while not being the same kind of passer that Williams is.
Williams was an All-Big Ten performer last season and so far has looked better than Edey. His ability to facilitate the offense helps out Ivey and the other guards while being extremely hard to stop without a double. As alluring as it can be to have the 7’4 Edey on the court, the senior Williams is the better option of the two to play. And if Coach Matt Painter agrees, Purdue could be giving a lot of gifts to its fans come March.
5. Arizona Wildcats – Find another guard to step up
When Tommy Lloyd took over as head coach of the Wildcats, he inherited a pair of international stars in Bennedict Mathurin (18.3 ppg and 6.6 rpg) and Azuolas Tubelis (15.3 ppg and 6.5 rpg). Those two, along with center Christian Koloko and point guard Kerr Krissa, have played very well and lifted this team into the top 10.
The one position of weakness Arizona currently has is at shooting guard. Guards Pelle Larsson, Justin Kier, and Dalen Terry have played well at times but in order for this team to be a title contender, needs to get consistent offense out of the backcourt and some threes made as well. Otherwise, they’ll be Mathurin or bust the rest of the way.
