Big Ten Basketball: Illinois rises, Iowa falls in latest power rankings
Although Big Ten Basketball teams have already had 13 games played against each other, we’re still technically going through non-conference play. Overall, it was a solid overall slate for the league, winning the ACC/Big Ten Challenge once again and getting a number of quality resume-building victories.
With just one more week before it’s nothing but conference games, here are the latest power rankings for Big Ten Basketball teams, starting from the bottom to the top. See where your team is located.
It was supposed to be the year that Fred Hoiberg and the Cornhuskers move out of the basement of the Big Ten Basketball ladder. They had their first-ever five-star freshman in Bryce McGowens and got a late pickup in Arizona State transfer Alonzo Verge.
However, as soon as senior guard Trey McGowens went down with an injury at the very start of the season, the major weakness that has been plaguing the program (lack of depth), once again was exposed. Bryce McGowens and Verge are each averaging over 15 ppg but no one else is over 9.0.
Frontcourt play has once again been an issue in terms of lack of production, including freshman center Wilhelm Breidenbach out for the season with an injury. And making matters worse, the Cornhuskers are one of the worst defensive teams in the country, ranking in the bottom-25 at 76.4 ppg.
After losing to Michigan at home by 35 points, there’s no question who the worst team in the Big Ten is at the moment. The question now is going to be whether or not Coach Hoiberg can salvage this season, and his job or not?
