Indiana Basketball: Superstition matters in loss to Iowa
By Jay Wilhelm
Indiana Basketball fell to the Hawkeyes in Iowa in a Big Ten matchup. Along with X’s and O’s, superstition may have played a part.
The Iowa Hawkeyes welcomed Indiana Basketball to Iowa City last night in a Big Ten battle against two very good basketball teams and two top-tier players in the country. The Hawkeyes defeated the Hoosiers by a final score of 83-74. Kris Murray ended up with career highs for the winning team finishing with 29 points and 11 rebounds.
The talented sophomore Trayce Jackson-Davis lead his team in a losing effort with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Both Iowa and Indiana move to 12-4 on the season although the Hoosiers are still ranked higher in conference standings.
Normally I’d sit here and tell you about who did what right and wrong. I’d mention the runs in the game and break down the Xs and O’s. Today though we are going to focus on Indiana head coach Mike Woodson’s outfit for the game. You read that right, the coaches’ attire is the focus of this one.
It used to be that head coaches in college basketball always wore suits during games and since COVID hit and for a stretch fans weren’t allowed in arenas to watch games, coaches have gone to more of a casual, comfortable approach with warm-up suits and tracksuits. This is where Coach Woodson comes in. If you’re a superstitious person or a former athlete who for sure had been that way at some point in your career this one will hit you closer. If not, maybe you’ll find it funny.
The Indiana Hoosiers and Mike Woodson are undefeated when he’s wearing a suit and he’s not won yet this season when he’s chosen the dressed-down option. Going based off Mike Woodson’s outfit choice last night I’m going to jump on the, “It’s coaches fault.” You guessed it, Woodson wasn’t in a suit and the final score reflected such poor decisions when getting dressed.
I think all fans of the Hoosiers should plead with their coach to keep that suit and tie at the ready and on his back. Let’s not have a season’s success at the hands of the fashion Gods.
