George Mason vs George Washington: 2021-22 college basketball game preview, TV schedule

After a long COVID pause, George Mason is scheduled to begin conference play on Monday against George Washington.

Game time: Monday, January 17, 2:00 p.m. ET

TV schedule: CBS Sports Network

Location: Charles E. Smith Center in Washington, D.C.

The George Mason Patriots (7-6) have had a roller coaster beginning to this season so far. They opened up the season winning their first four games and then dropped their next five in non-conference play.  Although they added some notable teams to their resume early in the season, they haven’t played recently due to positive cases within their program.

They were supposed to open up conference play on December 30th at VCU, however, the game was postponed and the Patriots faced No. 6 Kansas instead. Their matchup with the Jayhawks back on January 1st ended up being the last time they took the court in two weeks.

Although Josh Oduro was named to the Preseason All-Conference Third Team and has been an asset for George Mason, Davonte Gaines has been impressive through the first thirteen games this season.

The 6-foot-7 junior is averaging 11.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and is shooting 54.9 percent.  Gaines posted 15 points,12 rebounds, and shot 50.0 percent from three-point range against Kansas. He had 19 points, 11 rebounds, and shot 54.5 percent from the field in a loss to James Madison.

The George Washington Colonials (4-10) have faced several challenges so far this season. They dropped both their Atlantic 10 conference games played in blowout fashion to Dayton and VCU most recently.

James Bishop has been the most impressive player for the Colonials this season. He is averaging 15.6 points, 2.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and shooting 38.7 percent. Bishop posted 23 points in back-to-back games against Boston University and Charlotte in early December.

This is the perfect opportunity for the Patriots to take advantage of the Colonials’ struggles that they have been battling this season. George Mason will have to shake off some rust, however, to take the victory on the road in their conference opener on Monday.
