Saint Louis Basketball: Yuri Collins secures double-overtime victory over George Mason
Saint Louis Basketball guard Yuri Collins powered the Billikens in a thrilling 92-90 double-overtime conference victory over the George Mason Patriots.
Yuri Collins has been a dominant asset for Coach Travis Ford and Saint Louis Basketball all season. He really showed out in his performance Wednesday night against George Mason.
After George Mason tied the game with a Josh Oduro three-point bucket with six seconds remaining in overtime, Yuri Collins scored the buzzer-beating jumper to give Saint Louis the victory in a dramatic fashion. The shot will go down as one of the most memorable moments in program history.
The Billikens star point guard finished with a career-high stat line. Collins’ performance consisted of 35 points, 13 assists, five rebounds, and five steals.
Following the double-overtime victory, the Billikens improved their record to 15-6 on the season and 6-2 in conference play. They will return home to face the Dayton Flyers next time out at Chaifetz Arena.
The sophomore guard is averaging 11.4 points, 8.6 assists (best in the nation), and shooting 43 percent from the field. He has totaled 180 assists this season which is already more than his total in his previous two seasons with the Billikens.
Collins has been having a strong season and many believed he should’ve been a finalist for the Bob Cousy Award list, however, he was not named one of the nominees. The award is given out every year to the best point guard in the country.
Although the St. Louis native will not be the Bob Cousy Award winner, he will certainly be in the conversation for the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year award towards the end of the season. And with Dayton and a pair of games against St. Bonaventure coming up, Collins and the Billikens have the chance to play into the NCAA Tournament conversation. So if things go really well in the next couple of weeks, the program could be in great shape to get the ultimate individual prize and a big team one as well.
