What is wrong with UConn? Is Danny Hurley a bad game coach? – Patrick Madden (@TheSportsJD)
UConn is going to be just fine, they are going to make the tournament and finish in the top half of the Big East. They have some tremendous wins over Auburn and most recently over Marquette. The Huskies have one of the front runners for the Big East player of the year, in big man Adama Sanogo. UConn has faltered a little bit over the stretch but UConn is still going to make the NCAA tournament.
Since the Jim Calhoun days, the Huskies have been searching for a quality coach who is going to get them where they need to be. Kevin Ollie did win a National Title there but not many of those players were his own, as he was still living off of the Calhoun era players. Ollie essentially destroyed the program, that is until their new coach Danny Hurley got there. Hurley has built up the UConn program and has gotten them a consistent performer in the new Big East.
Hurley, much like his brother Bobby and his legendary father have a New Jersey temper and both he and his brother had a ton of success at a mid-major program before getting a head coaching job at a big school and having minimal success. The Huskies headman gets a lot of flack for his in-game coaching and at times it does leave some to be desired, but he still has a good team this season.
The Huskies are pretty much a lock for the NCAA tournament at this point, but they do probably want to keep winning. I don’t have a ton of confidence in UConn going far in the tournament as the team just doesn’t seem as engaged as they did earlier on in the year. They are still going to make the NCAA tournament though.
