Conference play is in full swing and being centrally located in Champaign, Illinois, I’ve had the opportunity to see most Big Ten teams play. After seeing these four teams, and six NBA Draft prospects, I’ve now seen every potential Big Ten draftee.

The three games I scouted were Michigan State @ Illinois (January 25th), Nebraska @ Northwestern (February 22nd), Ohio State @ Illinois (February 24th). Here are my notes on the draftable prospects in those games.

Malaki Branham- Freshman – Ohio State – 6’5, 180 lbs – May 2003

Branham was the prospect I was most intrigued to see live. After not getting a ton of reps in the non-conference, Ohio State has entrusted Branham with more reps and it’s paid off. Branham has been uber-efficient, averaging 16 points per game in conference play on 53/52/82 shooting splits. In-person, he looks roughly 6’5 with a plus wingspan.

Unlike some other Big 10 guards/wings, Branham had no trouble with Illinois’ ball pressure. He was dominant all night, scoring 31 points on 10-14 shooting (1-1 from deep). Branham has legitimate three-level scoring ability, getting downhill and finishing, hitting mid-range jumpers off the dribble, and showing a capable three-point shot (although I’d like him to take more).

Branham has terrific patience and control in the pick-and-roll. He probes the defense well and takes what the defense gives him. The next step would be drawing more gravity and hitting skip passes, but I think he can get to that point.

The sell with Branham is easy: a two-way wing with plus shot-making versatility. He’s got shades of Khris Middleton, albeit two inches shorter. I came away super impressed with his mental make-up. In a tough road environment, Branham was unfazed by the big moment, and calmly hit shot after shot.  While I think Branham was once a prospect with an interesting “stay or go” decision, I no longer think it’s a debate. Branham is a clear first-round pick and someone I’d target just outside the lottery.
