Atlantic 10 Basketball: 3 Takeaways from Davidson’s win over St. Louis
By Tyler Cronin
3. Grant Huffman Has Taken A Leap
Davidson’s backup guard had spent the earlier part of the season basically filling the necessary minutes to give the starters proper rest. The second-year guard was solid in handling major minutes at point guard during Foster Loyer’s February injury but he never showed much of a scoring touch, with the final week game against George Mason being the first time he scored in double-digits against a Division 1 opponent.
Today, Huffman spent most of the game off the ball and had 12 pts, making all four of his three-point attempts. He’s always been a smart player with decent shooting ability (37.5% from 3 career) but his big minutes in Loyer’s absence appear to have boosted his confidence.
This comes a day after Huffman’s superb play earned him 29 minutes, despite the presence of a healthy Loyer. Davidson’s bench has often been a weak point this season but with Huffman’s improvement and some very strong recent performances from Desmond Watson, it’s looking as good as it has at any point of the season.
