Mike Boynton

There’s no hard and fast rule on what kind of coach LSU has to hire or look at; they’re probably going to check a few big names off their list before focusing on more realistic candidates. All of the candidates in this article are realistic names and all of them could be intriguing fits with the Tigers. First off, we look at someone who has experience as a player and assistant in the SEC.

Boynton was a point guard at South Carolina two decades ago who got into coaching soon after graduating. He’s been on staffs at Wofford, South Carolina, and under Brad Underwood at Stephen F. Austin and Oklahoma State. When Underwood departed in 2017, Boynton became head coach of the Cowboys. Since then, he’s recruited top NBA draft pick, Cade Cunningham, leading the Cowboys into the second round of last year’s NCAA Tournament.

Oklahoma State is a good team in a tough conference, but Boynton’s overall record doesn’t exactly jump out, as he’s been below .500 in conference play in four of his five seasons. However, he’s got that SEC experience and certainly seems capable of recruiting at a high level without getting the FBI involved on campus. Plus, it wouldn’t be the first time LSU athletics would be luring a coach away from Oklahoma State.
