It’s officially Jon Scheyer’s team now

Starting Sunday morning on April 4th, 2022, Duke Basketball will have a new head coach in Jon Scheyer, who has been an assistant on the staff since 2013 and full-time since 2014. He was on board for the program’s title in 2015 and as a player, led the team in scoring (18.2 ppg) in their national title win in 2010.

Coach Scheyer was named “head coach in waiting” in June of last year, kicking off this retirement tour. And he was busy in terms of creating his first roster, landing four five-star prospects in the 2022 recruiting class, led by bigs Kyle Filipowski and Dereck Lively. It’s going to be a top-10 preseason team based on the roster’s talent but there is still work to be done.

There are certainly going to be some growing pains and pressure as the next head coach of Duke Basketball but as much as it would annoy Blue Devil fans to admit it, seeing the early success of Hubert Davis over at Chapel Hill gives a potential indication that Scheyer too can do big things in year 1.

But Coach Scheyer is going to have to start winning early to get anywhere near close to the accomplishments of Mike Krzyzewski, who ends his 47-year college coaching career with over 1,200 wins, 13 Final Four appearances, three National Coach of the Year Awards, and most importantly, five national championships. He couldn’t get his 6th this weekend but Duke Basketball will be back because they aren’t going anywhere… even with a new leader.
