Big Ten Basketball: Way-too-early power rankings for 2022-23 season
12. Maryland Terrapins
After months of not having a full-time head coach, Maryland finally has its new leader in Kevin Willard from Seton Hall. He’ll have a rebuilding effort on its hands, with point guard Fatts Russell not having any more eligibility and Eric Ayala moving on. Plus, Qudus Wahab has entered the transfer portal for the second time, leaving the team without a true center.
Maryland does have Donta Scott and Hakim Hart back, along with promising young talent Julian Reese and transfer Cashius McNeilly. Of course, they’re still going to need a point guard and center from the portal but at least they have a head coach to work with.
11. Rutgers Scarlet Knights
Almost all of the core of the NCAA Tournament-playing Scarlet Knights team is now gone, after leading scorers, Ron Harper Jr. and Geo Baker have departed. They could also potentially lose leading passer Paul Mulcahy and guard Caleb McConnell, who have entered the NBA Draft process.
The Knights do have center Clifford Omoruyi back and could be one of the best bigs in the Big Ten but need to add multiple pieces to have any hope of being back to the NCAA Tournament. But head coach Steve Pikell is back at least, as well as a ton of potential playing time for prospective transfers.
