NCAA Basketball: 10 teams that should target SMU transfer guard Kendric Davis
Duke Blue Devils
Barring an unexpected decision with the upcoming NBA Draft, Duke will likely be losing Trevor Keels, Wendell Moore Jr., and AJ Griffin in the backcourt (Griffin played a fair amount at the 3, allowing Moore to play all over the backcourt whenever Roach was out). That leaves Jeremy Roach at the point guard, along with former top-100 recruit Jaylen Blakes and incoming freshmen, Jaden Schutt and Dariq Whitehead.
Roach showed in the NCAA Tournament run that he can be a starting point guard for a national title contender but right now, he’s the only ball-handler on the roster for next season. Davis can play alongside Roach and start at the two-spot and have Whitehead at the three-spot, while Schutt comes off the bench. The concern would be having a 5’11 and 6’1 starting backcourt but the scoring potential and size in the frontcourt should offset that.
Gonzaga Bulldogs
Assuming that both Andrew Nembhard and Rasir Bolton are gone for good, the Bulldogs’ backcourt will be extremely young, with sophomores Nolan Hickman and Hunter Sallis as the projected starters, and Dominick Harris as the first guard off the bench. So like Duke, Gonzaga needs to add another ball-handler on the roster and when it comes to proven talent, Davis is above Hickman at the moment.
Davis has yet to make the Big Dance in his NCAA Basketball career and next to Michigan State and Kansas, no program has consistently made the postseason tournament more than the Bulldogs, including seven straight Sweet 16s. Davis could pick a team that’ll have a 90% chance of making the NCAA Tournament but Gonzaga can not only do that too but they can also let the SMU star be the focal point of the offense.
