NCAA Basketball: 10 teams that should target SMU transfer guard Kendric Davis
Illinois Fighting Illini
Illinois had a good past week, landing five-star combo guard Skyy Clark as Andre Curbelo’s replacement in the backcourt. But the team not only lost Curbelo but also sharpshooter Alfonso Plummer and veteran Trent Frazier this offseason as well. That’s a lot of production that a freshman guard would have to make up on his own and you have to expect Clark to have some growing pains as well.
Adding Davis to be the new starting point guard solves multiple potential issues. Clark is 6’4 and has the size to play off the ball while not having to be relied upon to do too much, while Illinois gets a veteran playmaker that can score while also feeding the ball to All-American big man Kofi Cockburn. This potential pairing would be even better than last season’s backcourt and assuming the big man comes back for one more year, the Fighting Illini has to go all-in for one final shot at a Final Four run.
Kentucky Wildcats
After losing Skyy Clark early in the offseason, Kentucky’s backcourt has become somewhat a mystery. Of the four guards currently on the roster, there’s five-star incoming combo guard Cason Wallace, as well as Iowa transfer CJ Fredrick, coming off an injury that cost them an entire season. Starting point guard Sahvir Wheeler hasn’t announced his intentions of staying or going and No. 1 incoming freshman Shaedon Sharpe could either play in college or enter the NBA Draft.
So technically, the Wildcats don’t have a healthy returning veteran confirmed on the roster so just in case, they should look into Davis. All of the attention is on National Player of the Year Oscar Tshiebwe at the fate of the center position but this team is a couple of decisions away from a backcourt with little depth. Davis would be a scoring upgrade over Wheeler while being just as good a passer.
