NCAA Basketball: 10 teams that should target SMU transfer guard Kendric Davis
Memphis Tigers
It’s been a fairly quiet offseason for Memphis so far, even though they have a few scholarships available and a need to upgrade a couple of positions. One of them is at point guard, as Tyler Harris and Alex Lomax are solid but underwhelming options against the better teams. Conference affiliation is a factor here, as head coach Penny Hardaway is completely familiar with Davis in the AAC.
The Tigers rebounded from their awful start to this past season but with the program now involved with the NCAA over alleged recruiting violations, that could impact how they’re viewed by players such as Davis. Memphis is unlikely to get a postseason ban and could offer 35 mpg to the Conference Player of the Year but will the guard want to remain in the AAC?
Michigan Wolverines
Michigan landed a point guard last year that had a similar path as Davis in Devante’ Jones. He was a former Sun Belt Player of the Year at Coastal Carolina, averaging around 15 ppg and 7.0 apg for a couple of years before improving to around 19 ppg and fewer assists. For the most part, Jones worked out in his lone season at Michigan but now both he and Eli Brooks are gone, leaving the backcourt to underclassmen guards, Frankie Collins and Kobe Bufkin.
If Davis is viewed as a better version of Jones, Michigan could really get a big-time pickup and give the former SMU guard a frontcourt star to work with in Hunter Dickinson, someone that Davis never has had in his NCAA Basketball career. His shooting and scoring ability would also be a big boost to the supporting cast, who at times struggled to get their own offense. Davis can set up everyone else, while also having Dickinson (assuming he returns), to take the pressure off of him.
