The 2021-2022 season for Juwan Howard’s Michigan Basketball team was a disappointment…until it wasn’t.  After opening the season as a consensus preseason top 10 team, the Wolverines found themselves firmly on the bubble from December on.

Then March arrived and Michigan flipped a switch, leading to NCAA Tournament wins against Colorado State and Tennessee, resulting in the second Sweet 16 or better appearance in as many years with Juwan Howard at the helm.

It’s hard to look back and pinpoint what version of last year’s team was the REAL Michigan Wolverines. Hunter Dickinson had moments of loud, in-your-face dominance along with a handful of quiet games.  Caleb Houstan was all-caps CALEB HOUSTAN at home and a guy who airballs a lot of open shots anywhere else.  Moussa Diabate did a lot of fun things and a lot of confusing things.

Maybe most importantly for the future of Michigan basketball, all of the above players mentioned could return.  Juwan Howard has navigated the recruiting trail and the transfer portal magnificently in his Michigan career thus far.  There will be many moving parts, but the Wolverines are set up in a good spot for success next season and beyond.

Here’s a closer look at some key storylines to watch for with Michigan basketball in the coming months.
