Oregon Ducks

The Ducks got the commitment of top-5 overall class of 2023 prospect Mookie Cook but what are they going to do for next season at small forward? That was a position of weakness this past season and without Eric Williams and Jacob Young, the team will need to add a wing somewhere. They’re in the mix for South Carolina transfer Jermaine Couisnard but if they don’t land him, could use Bates as the team looks to get back to the NCAA Tournament picture.

Oregon was in the mix for Bates last year and they and Dana Altman are consistently one of the better programs in NCAA Basketball. One benefit is that he can go out west and avoid the “east coast bias” effect and fly a bit under the radar in the Pac-12 compared to Arizona and UCLA, likely preseason top-10 teams for next year.

Syracuse Orange

After landing top-50 prospect Judah Mintz, the Orange has a quality incoming recruiting class to help offset the loss of the Boeheim brothers, a ton of scoring production. That leaves a bunch of newcomers to join Joe Girard and Jesse Edwards, as well as former top-50 forward recruit Benny Williams. This is a team that could use a couple of impact transfers and Bates is the type of forward scorer that can succeed offensively and he’ll have a lot of shots in this offense.

Head coach Jim Boeheim is one of the greats but his days are likely numbered and I’m not so sure this current roster will be good enough to get him back to the NCAA Tournament. He can take on a risk like Bates that has a huge potential reward and if he’s willing to play zone defense (might honestly be better at that than man-to-man), could see Syracuse as a good second landing spot.
