George Washington transfer Brayon Freeman announced his commitment to Rhode Island Saturday afternoon. Freeman became the first Rhody men’s basketball recruit during the Archie Miller era.

The 6-foot-2 guard chose Atlantic 10 program Rhode Island over the likes of Vanderbilt, Xavier, Arizona State, Cincinnati, and DePaul. He will have three years of eligibility as he enters his sophomore season with the Rams.

Freeman originally hails from Washington, D.C., however, was rated a top-two point guard out of high school in the state of Virginia. He formerly played for Huntington Prep in West Virginia before his commitment to Jamion Christian and the George Washington Colonials.

Last season, Brayon Freeman averaged 10.3 points, 3.7 assists, and shot 43.3 percent across 30 games. He started 16 games for the Colonials and reached double figures 18 times. Freeman was also named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team as he was among the league’s top fifteen in assists, steals, and assists-to-turnover ratio.

“Entering the transfer portal was stressful but, eye-opening at the same time…I chose URI because of the connection, URI, when I visited, made me feel like family. Also, I had prior knowledge to some of the coaches,” Freeman said on the Rhody Rumble podcast. He played for current Rhode Island assistant coach Kenny Johnson at National Christian Academy.
