NCAA Basketball: Analyzing the 10 teams in play for transfer Baylor Scheierman
A new top-tier player entered the NCAA Basketball transfer portal recently in Baylor Scheierman, a 6’6 guard from the state of Nebraska. He had a breakout campaign as a sophomore a year ago and continued that great play this past season, averaging 16.2 ppg, 7.8 rpg, and 4.5 apg.
Scheierman was the undisputed Summit League Player of the Year, leading the Jackrabbits in both rebounding and assists, while also just .2 ppg away from leading them in scoring. The guard was in double figures in 31 of 35 games, including 11 with at least 20 points this past season.
He had big games against high-major programs, including 10 points, 18 rebounds, and six assists on the road at Alabama, as well as 18 points and 10 rebounds against Providence in the NCAA Tournament. What makes Scheierman even more a star is his high-level efficiency, shooting 51% from the field, 47% from three-point range, and 80% from the free throw line.
An argument could be made that the Summit League’s lack of defense overall has helped his numbers but Scheierman’s versatility and size make it likely that his game can transfer to a higher level, even if he becomes a role player for a bigger program.
After entering the portal, many high-major teams were reportedly showing interest. And why wouldn’t they? He’s a 6’6 wing with size and elite shooting ability and as long as he isn’t a defensive liability, Scheierman should be able to start on a top-tier team with Final Four aspirations.
But which of the 10 reported finalists is the best potential fit for him? Here’s a closer look at the pros and cons of each option for the South Dakota State transfer.
