Villanova Basketball: Top 10 teams ever under head coach Jay Wright
By Bryan Mauro
2. 2015-2016
Record: 35-5 (16-2 in Big East) – Won national title
The very first national title for Jay Wright and the second one overall for Villanova. It was the first title since 1985 and it is safe to say that the team made up for their disappointing tournament run in 2014-2015. I’m sure if you look at the list of the best players to ever play for Jay Wright most of the core of this team would be on it. Josh Hart, Ryan Arcidiacono, Jalen Brunson, and Daniel Ochefu made up the core but none of them will be remembered as the hero.
That title goes to Kris Jenkins who hit a buzzer beater to win the title against North Carolina. That may have been one of the best title games of all time and Jenkins will forever live in the opening credits of the NCAA tournament as they show all the magical moments.
This team, just like every other successful Wright team did the things as he taught, they played smothering defense, took a ton of threes, made 36% of them, never turned the ball over, and shot almost 80% from the line. This team had some freshmen who were key pieces, but the core was determined to accomplish their goals and accomplish what no other team since 1985 has been able to accomplish and that is winning the National Title.
In addition to the national championship, they also secured the Big East regular-season champion. Big East Tournament runner up. They were ranked as high as number 1 in the country. They finished the year overall with a 35-5 record. That was the second season of four consecutive 30-win seasons. The dynasty was happening in the Big East and Villanova would only get stronger two seasons later.
