Villanova Basketball: Top 10 teams ever under head coach Jay Wright
By Bryan Mauro
1. 2017-2018
Record: 36-4 (14-4 in Big East) – Won national title
The second national title for Villanova and in my opinion one of the best teams to grace the floor over the last 50 years. This Wildcat team left no doubt in most of their games and had the best offense in the country. They ran the system under Wright about as well as it could be ran and exactly how it was designed. Villanova averaged 88 points a game which led the country, and they were one of the most efficient teams in the country shooting 50% from the floor,40% from deep and 78% from the line.
It was very fortunate for Villanova that a lot of guys from the 2015-2016 team decided to stay in college and not try the NBA. The also speaks volumes of how well the program was ran. Jalen Brunson was a junior on this team and Mikal Bridges, Omari Spellman, Donte DiVincenzo and Eric Paschall made up the rest of the starting five.
Every player shot over 35% from deep and four out of the five starters shot over 40% from deep. They were a joy to watch play basketball and when they were at the top of their game not a single team in the country could keep it close against them.
The average margin of victory for this team was 18 points both in the NCAA tournament and the regular season. They destroyed everyone they played and they do not get talked about near enough as one of the best teams of all time.
Sure, they won a title and its implied, but this team should be talked about more as one of the top 10 teams ever. They were very good and they are easily the best team in Villanova history.
