Villanova Basketball: Top 10 teams ever under head coach Jay Wright
By Bryan Mauro
3. 2014-2015
Record: 33-3 (16-2 in Big East) – Sweet 16 appearance
In my opinion, this was the best Villanova team that never won a title. This was a title team the year after and if this team would have made the final four or won the title. Coupled with the 2016-2017 team Villanova could have won five titles in a row. The Wildcats started their mid-2010s dynasty this year as well.
Ryan Arcidiacono, Josh Hart, Daniel Ochefu, and Kris Jenkins were all-stars on this team, and we’re getting primed for a huge run the next season to the NCAA title. That aside this team shot the lights out of the building, as they made almost 40% of their shots from deep and as always, they controlled the ball, played slow, and lived at the line.
This was the best defensive team that Wright ever had they were stingy on that end of the floor and allowed just a shade over 60 per game, all while scoring 77 a game. This would have likely been the best team that Villanova ever had but they didn’t win the title and they had a very disappointing tournament which continued the narrative that Wright can’t win in March.
The upset against NC State in the NCAA tournament was one of the bigger ones of recent memory considering how good this Villanova team was. This is the team that everyone thinks of what could have been given the way the next three years went for the program
