Every now and then, there’s a unique recruiting saga that happened in NCAA Basketball. Last year, it had to go to Patrick Baldwin Jr., who was a five-star prospect out of Sussex, Wisconsin. It wasn’t that there were many twists and turns, as the whole process was fairly quiet throughout. However, it became clear that it was down to the mighty Duke Blue Devils and the Milwaukee Panthers of the Horizon League.

On paper, it looked as if Duke was going to win out. But with Baldwin’s own father being the head coach of the Panthers, it proved to be too much to pass up, being able to play for his dad. Baldwin Jr. instantly became the highest-rated prospect ever to join the program and conference in history, giving them plenty of attention heading into the season.

Unfortunately, things were never able to materialize for both the player and the team. Things did start out well, averaging 20 ppg and 11 rpg in wins over North Dakota and Eastern Kentucky, as well as a season-high 26 points on 6/6 from three-point range against Robert Morris in league play. But Baldwin Jr. struggled in the other games and deal with multiple injuries that limited him to just 11 games played as a freshman.

Baldwin averaged 12.1 ppg and 5.8 rpg on 34% shooting from the field and the season didn’t help his overall NBA Draft stock. But after his father was dismissed after the season, the 6’9 wing/forward entered the draft process, where he’s still a projected 1st round pick. But as the deadline to enter without needing a waiver comes close, the player also entered his name into the transfer portal to have more options going forward.

The odds are high that Baldwin Jr. will remain in the draft but we’ve seen bigger switches in decisions so we have to operate as if the player could truly come back as a sophomore. But which teams would be in the picture for recruitment 2.0?

I think you have an idea of one of them, but check out the other nine NCAA Basketball programs I came up with.
