21. Dayton Flyers

2021-22 record: 24-11 (14-4 in Atlantic 10)

The Flyers were the youngest team in NCAA Basketball this past season, which showed in the four Quad 4 defeats that took them out of the NCAA Tournament picture. But the good news is that they were able to return just about everyone, which makes them a top-25 team in my eyes.

This was a roster that didn’t have anyone that averaged more than 13 ppg but they have a clear star in Da’Ron Holmes, who is an early 2023 NBA Draft candidate. He and starting point guard Malachi Smith are going to be consensus sophomore national breakout candidates and depending on how much they improve, the team could be ranked all of next year.

The supporting cast will look pretty much the same, with the exception of outgoing guard Elijay Weaver. Koby Brea and Kobe Elvis were near double-digit scorers and were Dayton’s two best three-point shooters, while forwards RJ Blakney and Mustapha Amzil provide different things in the frontcourt to compliment Holmes. And to replace backup center Moulaye Sissoko, the Flyers landed 6’10 big man Tyrone Baker from Georgia.

With more experience and the best players taking a step in their development, the Flyers will be in a great spot for next season. As long as they avoid the bad losses, they’ll be a surefire NCAA Tournament squad.
