NCAA Basketball: Updated WTE 2022-23 power rankings after transfer deadline
17. Memphis Tigers
2021-22 record: 22-11 (13-5 in AAC)
For the past couple of offseason since head coach Penny Hardaway arrived at Memphis, this program was reportedly involved with almost every five-star recruit and top-tier transfer. But the results of that have been mixed at best, including the problematic tenure of Emoni Bates this past year.
He’s gone, along with several players from the roster. Earl Timberlake, Joshua Minott, John Camden, Tyler Harris, and Landers Nolley entered the transfer portal, while Jalen Duren is a projected NBA Draft lottery pick. That left several roster spots open and no class of 2022 commits but this coaching staff has been much more selective as to who to target so far.
But that doesn’t mean that Memphis hasn’t been after stars. In fact, they landed arguably the biggest perimeter star in the portal in Kendric Davis, the reigning AAC Player of the Year at SMU. He’s the type of point guard that the Tigers haven’t had and will be able to lead an offense that has been up and down during the regular season.
Among the other key returners are guards Lester Quinones and Alex Lomax, and forwards Johnathan and Chandler Lawson. Big man Malcolm Dandridge could start at center in case Deandre Williams doesn’t return but if he does, that makes Memphis a legit contender in the AAC next season.
