Top transfer Baylor Scheierman joins Creighton Basketball for 2022-23 season
Creighton Basketball picks up a commitment from South Dakota State star Baylor Scheierman. The Bluejays become a Final Four favorite in 2022-23.
Baylor Scheierman committed to the Creighton Bluejays on Tuesday morning. Scheierman, a standout scorer at South Dakota State, was perhaps the most coveted transfer in the portal this year. He chose Creighton over Arkansas, Duke, Nebraska, and Clemson.
Creighton faithful are understandably over the moon after this latest pickup after an exhilarating offseason for the Bluejays. Scheierman, a Nebraska native, is the perfect fit in Creighton’s system. He will support the blow of losing Alex O’Connell (11.8 ppg) and Ryan Hawkins (13.8 ppg, 35% from 3). Shooting was the only real question mark heading into next year, and Greg McDermott tackled that obstacle in a major way.
Scheierman shot 47% from beyond the arc this past season and added nearly eight rebounds and 4.5 assists per contest as well. Baylor carried South Dakota State to a perfect Summit League season and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament before losing to Creighton’s Big East foe, Providence College, in the first round.
Scheierman also has great size at 6’6 and passes very well for someone who makes a living off of shooting prowess. Three-point shooting is certainly a large part of his game, but he can score in a myriad of ways. He posts up smaller defenders with ease and is continuing to work on creating off the dribble. Essentially everything South Dakota State wanted to do offensively ran through him. However, at Creighton, he’ll have quite a bit more help around him.
This offseason, Greg McDermott picked up the two things Creighton lacked, shooting and experience. TCU transfer Francisco Farabello, another long-range specialist, committed to Creighton in mid-April. Now, after Scheierman’s commitment, neither of these things will be much of an issue. Both Farabello and Scheierman will be playing their fourth year of college basketball this upcoming season.
The depth is what really could make this team special moving forward. A loaded backcourt of Ryan Nembhard, Shereef Mitchell, Farabello, and Trey Alexander will give McDermott a lot of options. Mason Miller, son of NBA legend Mike Miller, is expected to get some playing time along with Scheierman and Kaluma on the wings. Down low, Ryan Kalkbrenner inserted himself as a force to be reckoned with this past season. He will be spotted by both Kaluma and potentially freshman Fredrick King.
Creighton will be a trendy WTE Final Four pick this season, especially after this offseason.
With Scheierman’s lofty NIL deal target, it is clear that Greg McDermott and Creighton are going ‘all in’ for the upcoming season.
