NCAA Basketball: 10 teams that should target Chattanooga transfer Malachi Smith
Iowa State Cyclones
After Iowa State’s stunning rise in TJ Otzelberger’s first season, star guard Tyrese Hunter decided to enter the portal, where he remains today. The coach could find his replacement in the portal himself.
The Cyclones recently secured the services of Saint Bonaventure transfer guard Jaren Holmes, who averaged 13.5 points per game for the Bonnies last season. His arrival could make the need for Smith lesser.
Nevertheless, a team could never have too many scoring guards, especially one trying to establish itself long-term like Iowa State is. The Cyclones still have a couple of spots open on the roster and could have one of the most dynamic guard units in the country if Smith joins Holmes and likely returnee Gabe Kalscheur.
Dayton Flyers
This is a little less serious than the other teams listed. How funny would it be, however, if Dayton had another player named Malachi Smith?
For those not in on the joke, Dayton’s Malachi Smith proved to be a great player as a freshman, averaging 9.3 points per game while hitting 40 percent of his threes. He’s largely expected to be one of the top players for a potential top 20 outlet next season out of the Atlantic 10.
In all seriousness, though, Dayton could be one of the best mid-majors in the country next season, returning all of its starters from a year ago. Adding to the veteran-laden roster could elevate it from mid-major elite to straight-up elite.
