Rutgers Scarlet Knights

Biggest needs: PF/C

For this exercise, I’m going to assume that both Paul Mulcahy and Caleb McConnell will be back for next season. Otherwise, Rutgers will have to rework the backcourt as well. But the clear needs on the roster lies in the frontcourt, even with starting center Clifford Omoruyi set to return. With leading scorer Ron Harper Jr. gone, there’s next to no scoring depth in the frontcourt and no center to back up the big man.

Aundre Hyatt can get extended minutes at the four-spot and the Scarlet Knights have enough talented guards to play smaller lineups with Omoruyi on the court. This team will need some of the other returning players to produce more offensively, unless the Knights can find some kind of frontcourt talent that can potentially score double-figures inside.

Wisconsin Badgers

Biggest needs: SF/PF

The loss of Big Ten Basketball Player of the Year Johnny Davis obviously hurts the Badgers but they were able to land a pair of mid-major transfers in Max Klesmit and Kamari McGee to help build back the backcourt depth. The frontcourt also lost a pair of key pieces in Ben Carlson and Matthew Mors to the transfer portal and they haven’t been able to replace them.

Ideally, Wisconsin could get another true wing of size to replace Davis. But they also can just play three-guard lineups and should be able to get away with it. But frontcourt depth remains an issue, as there’s no depth behind Steven Crowl and Tyler Wahl. Landing one more big that can play either frontcourt position would be the best-case scenario if there isn’t another viable starter available after missing out on Grant Basile.
