Notre Dame Basketball: Mike Brey has interesting comments for coaches toward NIL
Notre Dame Basketball Head Coach Mike Brey has something to say regarding the important current topic of NIL. What did he have to say?
It may be the offseason in regards to college basketball being played on the court, but nowadays it really is a 365-day job. Especially with the transfer portal being such a big draw, and the emergence of the NIL being legal now at the NCAA level. Notre Dame Basketball Head Coach Mike Brey made sure everybody knew his thoughts on what is happening in college basketball on Tuesday.
Name, image, and likeness are great for the players being paid and being rewarded just like everybody else, but it has not been the greatest transition so far for all parties. Some coaches out there are not too thrilled with the process and how it is being used to recruit players by who has the biggest wallet in some cases.
On Tuesday, Irish head coach Mike Brey told the media at the annual ACC spring meeting how he really feels about what is going on in regards to name, image, and likeness. “Coaches have to stop complaining,” Brey said to the audience, but he did not stop there.
Brey continued going a bit deeper saying the following quote.
"“This is the world we’re in, and last time I checked, we make pretty good money. So everybody should shut up and adjust.”"
Some might say it’s easy for Mike Brey to tell people to shut up and adjust being at a school like Notre Dame. If Mike Brey was the head coach of the football team I could see a problem with his comments, but not sure the NIL is really going to be a huge boost for the basketball team compared to the football side.
Have to give Mike Brey credit for coming out and really letting his fellow coaches, and fans of the sport know his opinion on the matter. NIL is not going anywhere anytime soon, so I agree that coaches really need to adjust and get used to it being in the college game more. Should there be tweaks made to it overall? Of course, but those will hopefully come sooner rather than later.
Brey coming out and being pro-NIL looks good too because it shows that he is at least on the player’s side of things in regards to them getting paid. The Irish have not lost anybody yet in regards to the NIL as it is still pretty brand new, plus Notre Dame has only lost one scholarship player to the transfer portal this offseason, so his opinion could change over time if that did eventually happen more in the future.
Should be interesting to see if more coaches around the country come out and say some things similar to Brey, or if they still complain about the issue. Name, image, and likeness are here to stay, so not sure what complaining is really going to accomplish moving forward.
