Northern Iowa transfer AJ Green is one of the best free agents available. Could Iowa State Basketball potentially be the landing spot?

After a highly disappointing 2020-2021 season, Iowa State Basketball head coach T. J. Otzelberger certainly overachieved in his first season in Ames. Leading the Cyclones to their first Sweet 16 appearance since 2016. Unfortunately, the same group of guys will not be returning to campus next season.

Most notably will be freshman guard Tyrese Hunter. After an 11 ppg freshman campaign, he entered his name into the transfer portal. Leaving a giant hole in the backcourt. But coach Otzelberger may have a quick fix.

Nick Olsen an Iowa State insider at 247 sports, has given former 2x Missouri Valley player of the year AJ Green headed to Iowa State. Green was a 4-star recruit out of Cedar Falls Iowa and was extremely productive in his Northern Iowa tenure. After missing the majority of the 2020-2021 season, Green went on to average nearly 19 points per contest in 2022. Leading the Panthers to another Missouri Valley Conference regular-season title.

Crystal balls are never concrete. But this surely should have Cyclone fans excited about the potential pickup. Green is a deadly outside shooter who can create his looks off the dribble. Knows his spots well and knows how to get to them. He has a very high release on his jump shot and has no problem knocking down shots with guys in his face. His bag is full of step-backs, turn-around, and post moves on smaller defenders.

Next. Roster needs for each Big Ten team. dark

Being around some other ancillary pieces should only help Green out. Some was his own doing but he did take a lot of bad shots at Northern Iowa. Granted a lot when in. There were plenty of late-second shot clock heaves he was forced to shoot the hurt his field goal percentage. If he does indeed choose to attend Iowa State, he surely will be getting a lot of looks. And also could add an NCAA tournament run to his already polished college hoops resume.
