Tyrese Martin shows he can play a role

Martin had a strong-showing at the Portsmouth Invitational Camp, parlaying that into a G-League camp invite where he played. Martin flew severely under the radar as a prospect all season. As a senior, he averaged just under 14 points per game on 45/43/68 shooting splits, on an NCAA tournament. He’s big, strong, and a good athlete at the wing spot. But, nobody paid attention.

Martin was just okay in the first scrimmage, but his hard-nosed style was on display in the second one. He nabbed a game-high 14 rebounds, hit a corner three. He even showed some ball-skills.

Martin is on the older side as a prospect, but when drafting in the second-round, the majority of perceived “upside picks” don’t pan out. But at 6’7, Martin just strikes me as a wing that can stick in a rotation and provide minutes to any scheme. He’ll have to continue to shoot open threes with confidence. But Martin’s play in this pre-draft process has affirmed to me he should be drafted.
