NCAA Basketball: North Carolina transfer Kerwin Walton down to 5 teams
North Carolina made it to the NCAA Basketball title game this past season as an 8 seed, thanks to a core of five starters that led that way. That left limited minutes for the bench players, including Kerwin Walton who went from averaging around 15 mpg as a reserve to barely getting on the court at all in the final month of the season.
But Walton was a previous starter for the Tar Heels the year prior, putting up 8.2 ppg on 21 mpg on 44% shooting and more importantly, 42% from three-point range. As a 6’5 guard that can play both the shooting guard and small forward positions, Walton is a prospect with three years remaining that can be a solid impact piece for a new team.
With five reported finalists, which of them has the best chance to land Walton? Here’s a look at how he would fit with each of them from a roster perspective.
Clemson Tigers
The Tigers lost all three starting guards this offseason and haven’t done much to reload. The current replacements include former Baylor commit Dillon Mitchell and Boston College grad transfer guard Brevin Galloway. They’re hoping to find another ACC guard to join the ranks and provide much-needed shooting.
Next to Kansas State, Clemson offers the most amount of immediate playing time in the backcourt for Walton, and with Hunter Tyson and PJ Hall in the frontcourt, could help create a good enough starting lineup to become a threat in the ACC.
