8. G/F Emoni Bates – Memphis Tigers

2021-22 stats: 9.7 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 1.3 apg

The former five-star prospect averaged 16 ppg in the first three games but just around 8.0 ppg in the final 16 games of an injury-plagued and inconsistent lone season with Memphis. He shot under 40% from the field and failed to show any of those playmaking abilities that would’ve allowed him to run the offense.

But Bates is still a 6’9 guard that can shoot from anywhere and is still not even 19 years old. A new spot could be what he needs to have a big campaign and after releasing a top-6 list, could be going to Louisville, Seton Hall, or even Eastern Michigan. His recruitment has taken a while but expect a decision in the coming weeks.

7. G Courtney Ramey – Texas Longhorns

2021-22 stats: 9.4 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 1.6 apg

The addition of Marcus Carr to the Longhorns’ backcourt affected Ramey’s numbers but in the year prior, the 6’3 guard averaged 12.2 ppg and 3.9 apg and was an All-Big 12 player. Ramey is not only a solid combo guard that can run the offense but also is a good defender as well. He’s not going to be a 15-20 ppg scorer like the top-tier guards in the portal but Ramey can be a solid starter at the high-major level.

When Ramey left Texas this offseason, the first thought was that he’d rejoin his old head coach Shaka Smart at Marquette. But that hasn’t materialized, giving hope out there to teams that need another ball-handler that can warrant 20+ mpg next season.
