Maryland Basketball: Jahmir Young, Donald Carey spark Terrapins recruiting
Jahmir Young and Donald Carey Jr. are poised to be the first complete Maryland Basketball guard tandem under new Terps Head Coach Kevin Willard.
Mark Turgeon’s abrupt departure from the Maryland Basketball gig brought a lot of roster holes and deficiencies to light; Voids that new Terps head coach Kevin Willard needed to quickly address in the off-season in order for the 2022-23 edition of the Maryland Terrapins to have a fighting chance for an upper-echelon finish in the perpetually brutal Big Ten.
There still may be some questions about what the Terps will do to fill in post depth behind Julian Reese, but they’ve answered that question in the backcourt with a resounding yes.

Maryland snagged three-time All-Conference USA Team and Conference Freshman of the year Jahmir Young, who was one of the more valuable targets in this year’s transfer portal. In doing so, the Terrapins also landed a product from a storied local talent factory and national high school powerhouse in DeMatha High School. It’s the first time that a DeMatha Stag has played for Maryland Basketball since former Terp Travis Garrison in 2005.
Young was a legit standout from the moment he stepped on the court in Charlotte. His offensive prowess will give Coach Willard a potential impact scoring option at the point guard slot. The terrapin coaching staff also landed another local double-figure scorer in Upper Marlboro, Md. native, and Georgetown transfer Donald Carey Jr.
In a season to forget for the Hoyas, Carey was a lone bright spot. Carey developed into one of the best outside scoring threats in the Big East, shooting 44% from the 3-point line in 2021, 38% in 2022, and 91% from the free-throw line. He could be the ideal complement to Young’s ability to create off of the dribble with his ability to consistently knock down open looks.
Jahmir Young and Donald Carey Jr. could morph into one of the better backcourt combinations in the Big Ten, which would give the returning Donta Scott, Hakim Hart, and Julian Reese a huge respite from carrying the scoring load by themselves.
The two commitments came at just the right time during the off-season recruiting cycle. It’s gonna be interesting to see how Coach Willard and staff finish this off-season period.
