Big Ten Basketball: Updated early power rankings for 2022-23 season
1. Indiana Hoosiers
The Hoosiers made out very well this offseason when it comes to potential departures. They were able to bring back their star Trayce Jackson-Davis, coming off a season of averaging 18.3 ppg and 8.1 rpg. Also back in the frontcourt is Race Thompson, another double-digit scoring option inside.
Returning starter Xavier Johnson (12.1 ppg and 5.1 apg) can be up and down but was one of the best point guards in the country in the ladder half of the country. Wing Miller Kopp is back as well, along with young guards, Tamar Bates, Anthony Leal, Jordan Geronimo, and Trey Galloway.
What really makes Indiana a team to watch is the extra depth that the incoming recruiting class provides. Guard Jalen Hood-Schifino and forward Malik Reneau are both top-30 freshmen prospects and can add to both the backcourt and frontcourt respectively.
The only concern with the roster is three-point shooting, the same as last season. At least one of the newcomers can earn some playing time if they can become real threats from deep, which will only make the life of Jackson-Davis inside much easier. There are also some consistency concerns that made this team end up in the “play-in” game in the NCAA Tournament that’ll have to be addressed before they maximize their potential.
That being said, the Hoosiers easily have the highest floor of any Big Ten Basketball team and have the least areas of weaknesses on its roster. Of course, they could have a lower ceiling than some of the others, making the conference title up for grabs. But at least they can say they were the biggest offseason winner in the Big Ten… they just have to translate it on the court a few months from now.
