12. Maryland Terrapins

After the miserable past season that included a sudden coaching departure with head coach Mark Turgeon, the Terrapins are essentially starting over with Kevin Willard from Seton Hall and with a new set of core players after losing leading scorers, Fatts Russell and Eric Ayala, moved on.

Maryland added a trio of guards this offseason, including most notably, Jahmir Young from Charlotte. The 6’2 guard and 3-time All-Conference USA player is coming off a season of averaging 19.6 ppg, 5.9 rpg, and 3.7 apg and is going to have to put up similar numbers at the Big Ten level to keep this team competitive.

Another transfer guard to watch is Donald Carey, who averaged 13.5 ppg and 2.9 apg in 34 mpg this past season at Georgetown. He’s a solid double-digit scorer and can stabilize the backcourt but he was part of a Hoyas squad that went winless in Big East play. Two other newcomers to the roster are 6’5 wing Jahari Long from Seton Hall and 6’8 forward Patrick Emilien from Saint Francis (NY).

Donta Scott returning does give them a frontcourt option but while he didn’t play well last season, Qudus Wahab was still a big man the team needed in the Big Ten. Now the center position is a clear weakness unless 6’11 freshman big Caelum Swanton-Rodger can have an early impact.
