Shooting guard

Projected starter: Davonte Davis (16 mpg)

Looking at this roster, an argument can be made that there isn’t a true shooting guard, which creates a ton of different potential lineups and options throughout the season. On opening day, I wouldn’t be surprised if Davis gets rewarded for staying by getting early minutes. It would be a bit ironic since he’s a career 25% three-point shooter.

One thing that works in his favor is that Davis can create his own offense, which can take the pressure off of Smith. I’m sure we’ll see plenty of freshmen-only perimeter lineups but at least in the first month of the season, having another ball-handler and shot-creator in Davis will be good for Smith’s development, even if the junior isn’t going to be good off the ball.

Reserve: Ricky Council (16 mpg), Anthony Black (8 mpg) – In case of emergency/injury: Joseph Pinion

Council is a 6’6 guard/wing from Wichita State that averaged 12.0 ppg and 5.4 rpg off the bench. He was the AAC 6th Man of the Year and is comfortable being a reserve so I can see him staying in that role to start out. He’s a career 34% shooter from deep but was at 44 and 31% respectively in the first two years so it’s a question as to how effective he really is from deep. But his size, defense, and experience will be a boost to the Razorbacks roster.
