NCAA Basketball: 10 most unappreciated head coaches in 2022
By Joey Loose
The last few offseasons have been jarring in a way in the college basketball world. Each offseason sees players moving all around, whether by graduation, transfer, or NBA declaration, and it’s become complete chaos in recent years. However, what we’re talking about is more focused on the coaching carousel and the moves resulting from that. In the past fifteen months, legendary head coaches Mike Krzyzewski, Roy Williams, and Jay Wright have all retired.
Coaching in critical in college basketball, as is having the right guy in the head coaching job. Those three previously mentioned coaches accomplished many things in their careers, with all of them winning multiple national championships along the way. Two of them even coached in this past year’s Final Four, while the third watched his successor take North Carolina to the title game. These coaches in particular were icons in college basketball.
Today, we’ll be focusing on some of those coaches who aren’t quite at this iconic status. We’ll be focusing specifically on coaches who are underappreciated. That word can have many meanings or interpretation, and it’s hard to use just one justification. There are many coaches who could have been included on this list who were left off, and it’s easy to say that one deserves it over another, but we tried to focus on coaches who were successful, especially recently and consistently, but who don’t seem to be getting that level of respect.
Some of these coaches haven’t had the postseason success, while others have had plenty of it. Some are winning league titles regularly, while others are just competing in tough, gritty leagues. Furthermore, it’s very easy to disagree with someone’s inclusion or someone left off of this list, but after all it’s just an offseason list. Without any more empty words, let’s get right into ranking the ten most underappreciated head coaches active in college basketball.
