As noted, Tyrese Hunter is no longer with the Cyclones, so who’s going to fill the void? Jeremiah Williams should get a shot.

The versatile 6-foot-5 guard is a playmaker, through and through. In his first season with the Temple Owls, Williams led the program in assists and steals. He averaged 9.3 points and 4.1 assists per game in 2020-21.

Williams put up nearly identical numbers last season, averaging 9.5 points and 4.3 assists per game. His season was deterred by a shoulder injury suffered in early February, which forced him to miss seven of the team’s last eight games.

Williams grew up in Chicago, so a transfer to Iowa State gets him a little closer to home, in addition to competing at the major level.

Part of the reason Williams is getting lost in the shuffle is that T.J. Otzelberger is bringing in a really strong class from the transfer portal. Williams is being joined by Hason Ward, Osun Osunniyi, and Jaren Holmes. The Cyclones aren’t rebuilding, despite Hunter’s departure.

Holmes is more of a combo guard, so there’s an opportunity available for Williams to seize some playing time at the point guard position. Williams is not a good shooter (23.1 percent from three last year), but his ability to make plays and defend at a solid level should get him on the court.
