Casey Simmons – Northwestern Wildcats

2021-22 stats: 2.5 ppg, 1.5 rpg, 0.5 rpg

The former four-star recruit was a starter at the beginning of last season but never scored in double figures and saw his role diminish later on. But the 6’6 guard has long-term potential, particularly on the defensive end due to his size and athleticism.

Simmons would need to develop in a big way offensively but he could fit into Louisville’s rotation based on his defense alone and wouldn’t need a lot of usage either. For a team that has up to four spots available, taking a flyer out on someone like Simmons has little risk but a high reward.

Shaquille Walters – Northeastern, Santa Clara

2021-22 stats: 11.1 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 2.4 apg

The 5th-year transfer guard posted career numbers last season offensively, including 23 points against Delaware and 21 points versus Delaware. The 6’6 guard is a good rebounder and underrated passer as well. He’s a solid performer at the CAA level and can offer some solid minutes for Louisville at the two-spot.

Walters may be better off as a wing but the Cardinals need another scorer and a veteran with one year of eligibility that can have a positive impact. These may not seem like elite options at the moment but Louisville needs at least 1-2 more guards to feel better about next season. Could one of these eight playmakers be the next to wear the uniform?
