NCAA Basketball: Top 26 team transfer winners from 2022 offseason
Outgoing transfers: Joey Baker
Incoming transfers: Kale Catchings (Havard), Ryan Young (Northwestern), Jacob Grandison (Illinois)
For a team that has the No. 1 recruiting class once again, Duke doesn’t really need to land many transfers. But the need to add experience and capable veterans to offset the extreme youth from all of the freshmen.
Catchings is a 6’6 forward that had a breakout campaign as a starter at Harvard, averaging 9.1 ppg and 4.0 rpg while making 37% from three-point range. He’s a solid contributor that can add shooting on the wings, now that Joey Baker is at Michigan.
Ryan Young didn’t even start at Northwestern last season but still averaged 9.1 ppg and 4.2 rpg in 18 mpg. He was productive and efficient whenever he got on the court and at 6’10 and 240 pounds is a frontcourt depth piece for a Duke team that only has freshmen inside.
But what got the Blue Devils on this list was the pickup of Grandison, a 6’6 guard/wing that can play multiple positions. He averaged 9.6 ppg and 2.3 apg last season while shooting 41% from three-point range. The roster had weaknesses in terms of shooting and ball-handling and the Illinois transfer solves both of that. He also can be a 6th Man and can come off the bench if needed as well.
