NCAA Basketball: Top 26 team transfer winners from 2022 offseason
Outgoing transfers: Devin Askew, Courtney Ramey, Jaylon Tyson, Tre Mitchell
Incoming transfers: Sir’Jabari Rice (New Mexico State), Tyrese Hunter (Iowa State)
The Longhorns had their ups and downs last season, but hope that a major guard pickup can maximize the talent potential of the entire roster. Tyrese Hunter was one of the best freshmen in the country last season and played a major role in turning Iowa State from a 2-win team to the Sweet 16.
The Big 12 Rookie of the Year averaged 11.0 ppg and 4.9 apg last season. That included 23 points in a win over LSU in the NCAA Tournament, as well as 13 points and 10 assists versus Kansas State. He’s a quality playmaker and good defender and has real NBA potential if the efficiency, especially from three-point range, improves as a sophomore.
Pairing Hunter and Marcus Carr, who can play more off the ball, could be what Texas needs to improve offensively. And there’s another newcomer in Rice, a 6’4 guard, and 3-time All-WAC performer. He was a double-digit scorer in his three years as a starter and also is a good passer from the off-ball position. Rice also doesn’t need to have the ball as much, allowing both Hunter and Carr to lead the way offensively.
