NCAA Basketball: Analyzing the new 6 options for 5-star wing Mookie Cook
Kentucky Wildcats
The Wildcats coming into the picture isn’t a surprise, as they’re looking for a giant 2023 class. They already have commits from five-star PG Robert Dillingham and four-star shooting guard Reed Sheppard. They also are reported in strong shape for five-star center Aaron Bradshaw and five-star power forward Ron Holland.
If those four work out, that makes the small forward position all that’s left in the class. Chris Livington is a combo forward but very well could be gone after one year. Cook could be the next five-star commit for head coach John Calipari in the 2023 class but if another top-10 prospect picks the Wildcats first like Justin Taylor (also reportedly in the mix), that makes them less viable for this recruit in question.
Oregon Ducks
There was obviously a reason why Cook committed to Oregon the first time so there’s a chance that he can still join them after all. The local connection and obvious playing time at wing are there without question. And head coach Dana Altman has done well with wings, with Chris Duarte of the Indiana Pacers as the latest example.
The Ducks may not have the same national appeal like a Duke, Kentucky, or even Gonzaga at the moment and their NIL situation may not be as much as what the G League can potentially offer. This team has top-100 PG Jackson Shelstad in the 2023 class but would love to have a star like Cook to be the focal point. Otherwise, they’ll have to go find someone else to replace him in the coming months.
