Why DJ Wagner shouldn’t go to Kentucky

For starters, it only makes sense for Wagner to go to Kentucky if both starting point guard Sahvir Wheeler and incoming five-star freshman Cason Wallace are gone after next season. Wheeler is a fourth-year senior and Wallace is an early projected 1st round pick so it’s very possible for this to occur but you never know what will happen in the next 10 months.

Assuming that works out, the pairing of Dillingham and Wagner isn’t a guarantee to work out. Because Dillingham is more a true point guard, he’ll likely be the lead guard, while Wagner plays more off the ball. It’s not a fully similar comparison but TyTy Washington played a nearly identical role alongside Wheeler and his stock may have suffered for it, sliding down towards the end of the 1st round of the NBA Draft.

Who knows what would’ve happened had Washington played on-ball more and Wagner’s pro potentially likely would prevent such a fall. But he’s also not guaranteed to be the focal point of Kentucky’s offense. Dillingham could become the star of the team or any of the other five-stars that commit to the class.

It’s something to consider for Wagner, who could risk being a clear go-to option and star of Louisville to possible, no matter how small, a 3rd or even 4th option at Kentucky. His decision will have an impact not just on these programs, but on the SEC, ACC, and NCAA Basketball overall.
