NCAA Basketball: 10 biggest offseason losers from 2022 transfer portal
6. Marquette Golden Eagles
The Golden Eagles had two double-digit scorers from last season’s NCAA Tournament and one (Darryl Morsell) had no eligibility left while the other (Justin Lewis) went pro. That left a core of almost all underclassmen, including breakout candidates, Kam Jones, and Olivier-Maxence Prosper.
Marquette did add one newcomer, D-II forward Zach Wrightsil. But after losing Lewis, the team could’ve added at least one veteran and proven offensive scorer. In a Big East that added talent just about everywhere, including DePaul and Georgetown, it looked like the Eagles could be taking a step back in year 2 of the Shaka Smart era.
5. Purdue Boilermakers
After losing four rotation guards, including Jaden Ivey, Purdue has plenty of room available in the transfer portal for at least one quality perimeter player to pair with star center Zach Edey. The problem is, after missing out on a few prime targets, the team was only able to settle for David Jenkins Jr., who has a career average of 14.5 ppg but only produced 8.9 ppg last season at Utah, the lone high-major team he was on.
It’s disappointing for a team that will rely on a lot of role players trying to step up and fill out the rotation. Had the Boilermakers added one other guard to go with Jenkins, I’d probably take them off this list. But now, they could be wondering if they could’ve done more in the portal if Jenkins can’t be a 12+ ppg contributor.
