Big East Basketball: 2022 offseason grades for each team
DePaul Blue Demons – Grade: B
The offseason started out rough for DePaul, losing forward David Jones to fellow Big East Basketball program St. John’s. But they were able to land a pair of double-digit scoring transfer guards in Umoja Gibson and Caleb Murphy. Collectively, they may be able to offset the loss of star senior Javon Freeman-Liberty.
DePaul got a nice boost just a week ago with Eral Penn, a 6’7 forward from LIU Brooklyn who averaged 17.1 ppg and 7.4 rpg last season. He’s the best late option to replace Jones in the frontcourt and if these newcomers pan out, could be a surprise threat in the Big East.
Georgetown Hoyas – Grade: B+
After going winless in league play last season, the Hoyas had a complete roster turnover, including eight transfers. One of them is a reunion with center Qudus Wahab, who was an All-Big East performer with Georgetown in the first go-around. There’s also a nice mix of young and old double-digit scoring guards in Jay Heath, Primo Spears, and Bryson Mozone.
Had leading scorer Aminu Mohammed chosen to return for another year, the Hoyas would’ve had a go-to player on offense. It’s going to take some time to figure out the rotation and there are a number of scenarios that it can go. But at least on paper, this is a roster that has a solid ceiling for next season.
